One of seven national parks in British Columbia, Glacier National Park encompasses part of the Columbia Mountains and was established in 1886. Containing one of Canada's largest cave systems, the park is also home to 131 glaciers, covering 51 square miles (133 sq km) of the park. Black bears, grizzly bears, mountain goats and many other mammals, birds, and alpine species make their home in the park. Both the Canadian Pacific Railway and the Trans-Canada Highway pass through the park at Rogers Pass, commemorated as a National Historic Site.
