About Omaha Beach

The World War II D-Day landing beach was the site of the most bloodshed as United States military forces landed on its shore on June 6, 1944 and experienced more than 2,000 American casualties in the then German-controlled France. Omaha Beach was the code name for one of the five Normandy beaches that the Allies waged an assault on Nazi Germany coming from across the English Channel. While the Allies suffered approximately 10,000 casualties and fought a difficult battle with plans going awry, the Normandy invasion named Operation Overlord was considered to be a critical accomplishment during the war. Omaha Beach contains an artistic memorial to those who lost their lives on D-Day and some remnants of the war including an artificial harbor.
