Located on the lush Costa Verde that runs along the coastline of the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Paraty is a historic city from the Portuguese colonial and Brazilian Imperial periods that became a boom town after the discovery of one of the world's richest gold mines in 1696. Much of the beautiful architecture lining the cobblestone streets, including 4 baroque churches, has remained untouched for 250 years. Once a month when the tide is high and there is a full moon, the ancient streets are briefly flooded with seawater that pours through openings in the town’s seawall.
