About Place Jacques Cartier

The scenic public square was named in 1847 after the French explorer who declared Canada for France in 1535 and archaeologists determined it to be a gathering location for centuries. Nelson's Column, which is a monument to British Admiral Horatio Nelson for defeating the French in the Battle of Trafalgar, is in Place Jacques-Cartier. The square lined with Victorian street lights has restaurants, hotels, flower shops, artists, musicians and vendors. Vehicles are not allowed during the summer months.
